New York Mets v. Tampa Bay Rays Recap 8/31/2026

The New York Mets began a three-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida last night. The Mets in the first inning would have all three batters strikeout on just 10 pitches, the Rays pitcher Ian Seymour missed out on an immaculate inning by just one pitch. The teams would remain scoreless with both Ian Seymour and Robert Stock putting zeros up on the board until the Mets finally broke through with the first run of the game in the fourth inning following a double by Bo Bichette and a single by Carson Benge, Mark Vientos would ground into a double play and that would kill the momentum for the inning as the Mets were held to just the one run. Robert Stock got into his first real trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning when he loaded the bases with nobody out but got out of the inning unscathed getting a groundout from Taylor Walls, a strikeout of Yandy Diaz, and a flyout by Jonathan Aranda to left field that Christopher Morel made a leaping catch on to save a three-run double. Robert Stock had his best start as a Met and pitched into the sixth inning for the first time this season. Robert Stock’s final line in the game was 5.1 Innings, 5 hits 0 runs, and 0 walks. He was then replaced by Nate Lavender with 1 out in the sixth inning and Lavender would get the final 2 outs of the frame. The Mets would add on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning with Mark Vientos hitting a home run to start the inning and Francisco Alvarez driving in a run with an RBI single. Dedniel Nunez came into the game for the Mets in the seventh and kept the Rays scoreless with a 1-2-3 inning with a groundout to first, a strikeout, and a flyout. The Rays would break through in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Daniel Duarte getting an RBI single from Chandler Simpson, and an RBI single from Liam Hicks but that was all they were able to get as Chris Devenski came in to get the final out of the inning and maintain the Mets lead. The Mets threatened to add some insurance runs in the 9th inning but left the runners stranded after Christian Pache and A.J. Ewing got singles but Juan Soto was struck out on three-pitches as a pinch-hitter. Kodai Senga would come into the game for the save and allowed the tying run to reach first base with a leadoff walk and then a fielder’s choice but got out of the inning and maintained the lead. The Mets held on to win 3-2. The Mets improved to 62-76 on the season, while the Rays fell to 82-55.
