The New York Liberty hosted the Golden State Valkyries from Barclays Center last night. The first quarter was very tightly contested with the Valkyries first jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the early stages of the game but the Liberty would respond with an 11-0 run of their own and take the lead 15-11 but the Valkyries would close the quarter strong and outscore the Liberty by 2 in the quarter with a score of 21-19 after the first, in the second quarter, the Valkyries would ramp up their defense and hold the Liberty to just 11 points in the frame while scoring 21 points of their own and they would take a 42-30 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Valkyries would use their defense to extend their lead to as many as 19 points as the Liberty were unable to get anything going with the teams scoring 17 points each in the third quarter which gave the Valkyries a 59-47 lead headed into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, The Valkyries would outscore the Liberty 20-13 and win by a final score of 79-60. Those 60 points are the lowest point total scored by the Liberty in a game so far this season, and the Valkyries are the only team that the Liberty haven’t beaten during the regular season. In the win, the Valkyries had 3 players score in double-digits and a 4th player who was just a couple points shy of 10 points led by Cecilia Zandalasini who had 20 points on 8-17 from the field, 4-10 from three, grabbed 5 rebounds, and picked up an assist, Gabby Williams had 16 points on 6-15 from the field, 4-8 from three, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out three assists, and picked up 2 steals, Tiffany Hayes had 12 points off the bench on 3-5 from the field, and 1-2 from three and 5-6 from the free throw line, grabbed two rebounds, and picked up a block, Veronica Burton had a really good game scoring 8 points, grabbing 2 rebounds, dishing out 13 assists with 0 turnover which is her 5th career game with 10 or more assists and 0 turnovers which puts her second in WNBA history only trailing Sue Bird who had 7 such games. In the loss the Liberty only got double-digits from two players led by Jonquel Jones who had 18 points on 6-11 from the field, 4-6 from three (Jones accounted for 4 of the 7 made threes by the Liberty), 2-3 from the free throw line, grabbed 7 rebounds, and picked up 3 blocks, Breanna Stewart had 16 points on 4-10 from the field, 0-1 from three and 8-10 from the free throw line, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and picked up a block. The Valkyries improved to 28-11 on the season while the Liberty fell to 23-16 and dropped to 8th place in the standings after the Mystics beat the Mercury.
