The Phoenix Mercury hosted the Portland Fire on Diana Taurasi jersey retirement night last night. The Mercury jumped out to an early lead and held a 22-18 lead after the opening quarter, they would hold the Fire to 18 points again in the second quarter and take a 42-36 lead into the halftime break. After halftime the Portland Fire offense figured it out as they would outscore the Mercury 25-22 in the third quarter and trim the lead down from 6 to 3 points as they trailed 64-61 entering the final quarter. In the final quarter the Fire would outscore the Mercury 27-21 and pull ahead to pull off the comeback win taking the game by a final score of 88-85 even with Alyssa Thomas hitting a ridiculous one-legged three pointer with her left hand, and Sami Whitcomb getting a good look at the buzzer that just rimmed off after she tried to bank it in with the defender draped all over her. Only 2 players scored in double-figures for the Fire but they had three players finish with nine points led by Carla Leite with 23 points (15 of them coming in the 4th quarter) on 9-15 from the field, 1-2 from beyond the arc, 1 rebound, 5 assists, and 2 steals, Megan DiLeo had 15 points on 6-11 from the field, 3-7 from beyond the arc, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 1 assist and had 2 steals, Bridget Carlton did not have the best shooting night but finished with 9 points on 3-15 from the field, 0-8 from three, and went 3-3 from the line, grabbed 5 rebounds, had 1 steal, and 2 blocks including a block on a driving Kahleah Copper who was trying to tie the game, Emily Engstler had 9 points on 4-7 from the field, 1-4 from three, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists, Frieda Bühner had 9 points on 3-6 from the field, 3-5 from three, and grabbed 4 rebounds. In the loss the Mercury had 4 players score in double-figures led by Dewanna Bonner’s 23 points on 7-16 from the field, 4-10 from three, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal, Kahleah Copper had 19 points on 6-14 from the field, 2-4 from three, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 1 assist, Alyssa Thomas stuffed the statsheet with 17 points on 7-11 from the field, and 1-1 from three, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out 9 assists, and picked up 2 steals, Sami Whitcomb had 11 points on 3-10 from the field, 1-8 from three, grabbed 2 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and picked up 2 steals. The Portland Fire improved to 15-20 on the season while the Phoenix Mercury fell to 13-23.
